Homemade Pita Bread
Ingredients
- 2 Cups All Purpose Flour (+ 1/4 cup for rolling dough)
- 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
- 1 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
- 1 Tablespoon Honey
- 1 1/2 Cup Warm Water
- 3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
- 1 Package Yeast (2 1/4 Teaspoons)
- In the bowl of your stand mixer with the dough hook attached, add the all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, yeast and salt. (If you are not using rapid rise yeast, activate the yeast according to the package directions, then add to the mixture.)
- Blend for about 30 seconds, then add in the honey, warm water and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
- Mix for 1 - 2 minutes on low.
- Turn to medium and let the dough knead for about 7 to 10 minutes.
- Drizzle the remaining tablespoon olive oil onto the dough, coating the outside well.
- Cover with a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm place to rise for 1 1/2 hours.
- Punch the dough down. Pinch into 8 equal pieces and place on a clean towel to rest for about 30 minutes. Cover with another clean towel.
- Place a pizza stone in the oven and heat to 450 degrees. If you do not have a stone just use a cookie sheet.
- Once your oven is hot, sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll each ball of dough out into a round shape.
- Place 1 or 2 pieces of dough on the pizza stone and with a spray bottle, squirt one or two sprays of water into the oven, then close quickly. The steam helps the dough puff properly. Cook about 3-5 minutes until puffed and golden.
- Continue cooking in this manner until all the pitas are cooked.
- Eat immediately or you can cool and store in a Ziploc bag for a couple of days.
