Homemade Pita Bread

Hot Yummy Pita Bread!
One would think that pita bread is difficult to make at home but it is really quite simple.  Just a few ingredients, a pizza stone and a hot, hot oven and you can enjoy really delicious pita bread.  Now it is not going to be as good as what you could get from a bakery in Turkey or a Middle Eastern Bakery but it will definitely be better than what you can buy packaged here in the States.  So don't be intimidated and give it a try.  You will be pleasantly surprised.  My recipe is below and you can either make all of them at once or you can store the dough in the fridge for a couple of days and cook them as needed.  Hope you enjoy.  Afiyet olsun!

Here is how your dough should look when you are on step 7 of the recipe below.
Resting dough.

This is how thin you should roll the dough out and how it should look for step 9.
For best results, roll thin!

You can roll a few of them, while the first ones are cooking
and place on wax paper till you are ready to place in hot oven.

And here is your yummy pita bread, ready for hummus, yogurt cheese, with meze, alongside juicy food or ready to make a sandwich.
This was so easy to make!

Ingredients
Cooking Directions
  1. In the bowl of your stand mixer with the dough hook attached, add the all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, yeast and salt. (If you are not using rapid rise yeast, activate the yeast according to the package directions, then add to the mixture.)
  2. Blend for about 30 seconds, then add in the honey, warm water and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  3. Mix for 1 - 2 minutes on low.
  4. Turn to medium and let the dough knead for about 7 to 10 minutes.
  5. Drizzle the remaining tablespoon olive oil onto the dough, coating the outside well.
  6. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm place to rise for 1 1/2 hours.
  7. Punch the dough down. Pinch into 8 equal pieces and place on a clean towel to rest for about 30 minutes.  Cover with another clean towel.
  8. Place a pizza stone in the oven and heat to 450 degrees. If you do not have a stone just use a cookie sheet.
  9. Once your oven is hot, sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll each ball of dough out into a round shape.
  10. Place 1 or 2 pieces of dough on the pizza stone and with a spray bottle, squirt one or two sprays of water into the oven, then close quickly. The steam helps the dough puff properly. Cook about 3-5 minutes until puffed and golden.
  11. Continue cooking in this manner until all the pitas are cooked.
  12. Eat immediately or you can cool and store in a Ziploc bag for a couple of days.
